Your appointment with Mary or Carolyn
What is physiotherapy?
Physiotherapy is treatment to restore, maintain and make the most of a patient’s mobility, function and wellbeing. Physiotherapists are experts in the structure of the human body and its movement. Physiotherapy treatments can involve exercise, massage and manipulation in order to alleviate pain, restore function, or lessen the effects of any dysfunction.
How can it help me?
Our physiotherapists Mary Shearer and Carolyn Urquhart work with our breast cancer patients from diagnosis through to post-treatment, supporting them through gentle treatments that help to reduce the risk of complications after breast cancer surgery. These appointments are often able to coincide with specialist appointments at the centre, so you can see your breast surgeon, oncologist and physio all in the one day.
What can I expect?
In your first appointment with Mary or Carolyn, you’ll discuss your symptoms and there will be a physical examination of any areas of concern. You’ll discuss your treatment plan, and you’ll be given exercises and strategies to assist in building strength, managing side effects such as fatigue and maintaining a healthy body during cancer treatment. Hands-on treatment such as massage is used as required to treat any problem areas.
