Breast FAQs

  • To better manage the number of review patients and reduce your waiting time, you may be seen by our breast clinician. You’ll remain under the care of your breast specialist who will always see you if a new problem arises. Our breast clinician works alongside our specialists to provide you with the best ongoing care.

  • Patients seeing our breast doctors should wear comfortable clothes with a top that can be easily removed. Please don’t wear deodorant, talcum powder, creams or jewellery, as these can interfere with your results.

  • Patients undergoing chemotherapy should avoid wearing acrylic nails and fake tan as these can react with chemotherapy medication and treatment. For all other patients, these are fine to wear.

  • You’ll meet with one of our breast doctors for a thorough clinical assessment and physical examination, reviewing both your symptoms and risk factors. This will be followed by a mammogram, ultrasound (if required) and fine needle aspiration or core biopsy (if required). You should allow up to two hours for these exams; our team works as quickly as possible while ensuring each patient receives adequate time and care for accurate results.

You’ll see your breast doctor again to discuss your results. If required, we’ll book you in to see one of our breast surgeons or our medical oncologist to discuss further testing and treatment options. You’re also welcome to meet with our McGrath Breast Care Nurse who provides advice and support for breast cancer patients as a complementary service.

  • Mammograms are generally safe for women with implants. Implants can hide some breast tissue, making it harder for the radiologist to see a problem when looking at your mammogram. To see as much breast tissue as possible, the technician will gently lift the breast tissue slightly away from the implant and take extra pictures of your breasts. It’s important you let your doctor know about your implants, and they’ill work with you to decide the best method of testing.

  • Yes, it’s safe for you to have a mammogram. It’s helpful if you can tell the mammographer where your pacemaker is located.

  • A woman’s breast tissue is very dense while breastfeeding, making a mammogram less effective. For this reason breastfeeding women are advised to postpone their mammogram until three months after they’ve finished lactation. Talk to your breast doctor about your breastfeeding plans so that your appointment can be arranged to suit.

  • We understand that a mammogram can be a little daunting for some women. You should rest assured that our female-only radiographers are respectful of your privacy at all times. You’ll be asked to remove your top in private. Your female radiographer will then work with you to ensure you’re comfortable.

  • You may experience some slight discomfort with your mammogram or needle biopsy (if required). However, our team is skilled at minimising discomfort.

Kidney FAQs

  • Prior to your first appointment you’ll need to have blood and urine testing, referred by your GP. Please bring these results with you.

You’ll then see your nephrologist (a doctor with advanced specialist training in kidney health) who will analyse your test results, perform additional tests and determine the next steps for your treatment.

Your nephrologist will talk to you about your condition, when and if you need to come back, and your ongoing treatment plan.

  • It’s important to get your blood and urine tests done before your visit with plenty of time for the results to be made available, so these can be discussed with you at your appointment. Having the blood test done a few days or a week before the appointment is appropriate. Please call reception if you have a concern or have lost your request form.

  • Our nephrologists provide thorough pre and post-transplant care. We have an excellent referral network and are able to refer patients to leading transplant unit. Our nephrologists also provide ongoing management for dialysis patients and can help you find the most convenient and comfortable dialysis option for you.
