Dr. Matt Mason, Radiation Oncologist

Dr. Matt Mason is a Radiation Oncologist who, with over 15 years of experience in Oncology, specialises in the treatment of breast cancer. Based at GenesisCare in Gateshead and East Maitland, he also has a visiting medical officer appointment at Lake Macquarie Private Hospital. He is a member of the Hunter New England Breast Cancer and Head and Neck Multidisciplinary Teams.

After graduating from Nottingham University in 2004, Dr. Mason trained at St James’s University Hospital in Leeds, UK to become a Fellow of the Royal College of Radiologists in 2011 (FRCR) and Clinical Oncologist. Dr. Mason has always been interested in technical radiotherapy and he completed a two-year clinical fellowship at Princess Margaret Cancer Centre, Toronto, Canada. This experience focused on the management of head and neck malignancies, CNS tumours and spinal stereotactic radiotherapy. He relocated to Australia in 2015 and became a Fellow of the Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Radiologists (FRANZCR) in 2018. Matt initially worked as a Staff Specialist in Radiation Oncology at the Calvary Mater in Newcastle.

Dr. Mason takes an active role in research and has several publications. He has a Conjoint appointment as Lecturer, with the University of Newcastle School of Medicine and Public Health and enjoys providing clinical teaching for patients, students, and trainees.

Dr. Mason is interested in Patient Reported Outcomes and how these might guide patient care. He also is interested in technical radiotherapy advances to improve cancer control and reduce patient side effects.
