What is dietetics?

Dietetics is the science of how nutrition affects our health. Dietitians are experts in food and nutrition. They provide guidance about how to appropriately manage diets and nutrition for people who may be affected by health conditions such as diabetes and renal disease. A dietitian can help people maintain their health and reduce their risk of developing chronic disease.

How can it help me?

Our Accredited Practising Dietitian, Joanna Stockings, is here to help people with kidney disease better understand basic dietary guidelines for renal insufficiency, and address nutritional concerns while preserving and maintaining kidney function. Breast cancer patients undergoing treatment can also greatly benefit from dietary advice to help manage many of the side-effects that accompany treatment for breast cancer. Jo believes food should be enjoyed, and dietary changes should be sustainable. She works closely with her clients to optimise their dietary intake for health benefits in chronic disease, with a focus on practicality and enjoyment of food.

What can I expect?

An initial appointment with Jo will take 40 minutes. Please bring along any recent blood tests and medication lists. Jo will go over your medical history, medications, blood test results and your body weight, height and history of any weight loss or gain. Jo will ask you about any symptoms you have which may be caused by your disease or the treatment. Finally, Jo will go over what you eat, your likes and dislikes, and any questions or concerns you have. With all this information Jo then works with you to develop an individual diet plan based on your needs and preferences.
