Dr. Charles Douglas, Breast & Melanoma Surgeon
Dr Charles Douglas joined The Breast Centre in 2004. His undergraduate qualifications include a Bachelor of Science (Mathematics) from the University of Adelaide, a Bachelor of Medicine with Honours and a Bachelor of Medical Science with First Class Honours from the University of Newcastle. Dr. Douglas has specialised exclusively in the management of breast cancer and melanoma since obtaining his fellowship (FRACS) in general surgery in 2003. He is a member of the Hunter New England Breast Cancer and Melanoma Multidisciplinary Teams and between 2010 and 2015 served as the Director of the Newcastle Melanoma Unit.
Dr. Douglas also has a long-standing interest in ethics and law. He completed a PhD (on end-of-life decision making) at the University of Sydney in 2012. Between 2004 and 2020 Dr. Douglas held an academic appointment at the University of Newcastle where he is now an Honorary Senior Lecturer in Clinical Ethics and Health Law. He has been heavily involved in training undergraduate medical students and he has published more than 30 research papers on a diverse range of topics in medical ethics, medical law and surgery. He has won research prizes for his work on appendicitis and his papers on appendicitis, end-of-life decision making and surgical ‘flap’ repairs have together been cited more than 600 times.
In 2021 Dr. Douglas completed postgraduate degrees in law (Juris Doctor / Graduate Diploma of Legal Practice) at the University of Newcastle. He was admitted as a lawyer of the Supreme Court of NSW in February 2022. In July 2022 Dr. Douglas was awarded the College Medal for academic excellence in the JD/GDLP program.
